Congress Delays Medicare Payment Cuts Until June 1
President Barack Obama signed into law the Continuing Extension Act of 2010, which again temporarily delayed the 21 percent cut in Medicare physician payments. Congress postponed the payment reduction until June 1.
The cut had actually gone into effect April 1, but Medicare had instructed providers to hold off submitting claims on the assumption that Congress would act to postpone the reduction. Effective immediately, claims that were being held by Medicare contractors are being released for processing and payment.

Delaware BlueCross Scrutinized after Requiring Pre-Approval of Imaging Tests
BlueCross BlueShield of Delaware (BCBSD) is under fire from several lawmakers after it put forth new criteria that will require imaging scans, such as PET, CT and MRI, to be pre-approved by a third-party company MedSolutions, which will determine whether or not the test is “appropriate” for a patient.

JNM: Cyclotron Could Be Alternative to Reactors in Tc-99m Production
Cyclotrons that are capable of producing large quantities of technetium-99m (99mTc) would effectively complement the supply of medical isotopes traditionally provided by nuclear reactors, while sustaining the expanding need for other medical isotopes, including short-lived positron emitters for PET, according to this month's Journal of Nuclear Medicine.

Share these Clinical Practice Guidelines with referring physicians, nuclear medicine physicians and radiologists to serve as an educational tool and to increase appropriate utilization of PET imaging based on medical evidence. They include practice guidelines developed by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM) and other professional societies.
Use the Procedure Guidelines to help identify those elements of PET imaging procedures that are most important in obtaining a high-quality examination. These guidelines were developed by professional societies for the molecular imaging community.
