Initial Data Promising for PET Imaging Biomarker
Results of initial research on Siemens Healthcare's PET imaging biomarker showed the agent can be safely biodistributed in humans and that it is stable for imaging 133 minutes after injection. SNM: 75% of Nuclear Medicine Physicians Delay Tests Due to Mo-99 Shortage
SNM recently conducted a survey of nuclear pharmacies—pharmacies that supply the critical radioisotope Technetium-99m, which is used in more than 16 million nuclear medicine tests each year in the United States—to assess, anecdotally, the impact of the worldwide medical isotope shortage. According to the survey, 60 percent of radiopharmacies have been impacted by the most recent shortage. Technetium-99m is a product of Molybdenum-99, which has been in short supply recently.
Nuclear physicians and pharmacists are making changes to cope with the shortage, while striving to provide patients with the highest levels of care possible. For example, 75 percent of physicians are rescheduling patient tests by at least one day. In more than one out of three of these cases, tests have been delayed for longer than one month.

JTO: PET/CT Can Be Used to Fast Track Lung Cancer Diagnosis
PET/CT can be used to diagnose lung cancer in a “fast-track” setting, according to a study published in the October issue of the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.
Tjeerd S. Aukema, MD, from the Netherlands Cancer Institute in Amsterdam, and colleagues performed a prospective study on 114 patients with pulmonary symptoms or abnormal chest x-ray who were referred for fast-track assessment at the Netherlands Cancer Institute between March 2005 and September 2007.
According to the authors, evaluation of each patient was done in a multi-disciplinary setting, which included F18-FDG PET, diagnostic CT and bronchoscopy (including biopsy), with histopathological evaluation as the reference standard. The fast-track model tested patients over the course of one day.
