CMS Reconsiders Coverage for NOPR — Comment Deadline May 10th

As a reminder, the reconsideration of the National Coverage Determination for PET is open for public comment now through Saturday May 10, 2008. It is extremely important that providers, but especially referring physicians, submit comments regarding changes in their patient's management achieved through NOPR coverage.  The links below will take you to the Society of Nuclear Medicine, where you can find draft templates for this purpose, and to the CMS page where you may submit comments.

Reimbursement Woes Call for Paradigm Shift

Taking full advantage of potential business opportunities requires a shift in the current reimbursement paradigm. Typically, a single provider drives a reimbursement strategy, sometimes with the aid of a single vendor. This paradigm needs to shift to a much more coordinated effort between vendors and providers, increasing their ability to influence positive reimbursement outcomes.

Vendors Partnering with Providers

Existing economic concerns in diagnostic imaging and fears of further reimbursement cuts on the horizon have created a crisis where providers find their current reimbursement efforts are no longer sufficient. In the article "Reimbursements woes call for paradigm shift", Michael Longacre discusses the need for a more coordinated effort and direct cooperation between vendors and providers to achieve the highest potential for a successful reimbursement program; PETNET Solutions has been working alongside our customers toward that end since 1989.

PETNET Solutions offers the information and resources to support many providers across the country in successfully performing their role in the reimbursement process.  This is accomplished through our resources on MI LifeNet and through the expertise of our Territory Managers.

Behind the scenes PETNET Solutions has supported grassroots and advocacy groups through participation in professional organizations such as the Academy of Molecular Imaging (AMI), the Council on Radionuclides and Radiopharmaceuticals (CORAR), and the Society of Nuclear Medicine (SNM). This has allowed us to bring our customers the latest reimbursement information through Everything PET on the Net.

Our MI LifeNet Reimbursement Information module gives the provider a clear reimbursement strategy and provides many useful resources for developing a successful reimbursement program. The focus is on tracking covered indications and payments, and working as a team to achieve better communication, training, education, data collection, and claims follow-up.

Educating physicians, payers and medical policy decision makers about the correct utilization of PET imaging requires more detailed clinical information.  This information can be found in the Oncology Marketing Kits, the case studies provided in MI University and the Abstract Database of relevant journal articles.

Providers should not underestimate the value of their patients as advocates for PET technology and should recognize that they can play an important role in influencing payer reimbursement policies. MI LifeNet’s new Marketing Kits provide educational patient brochures, and the Reimbursement Resources section provides letter templates to appeal unpaid claims.

By partnering with a vendor who provides a vast array of educational materials to customers nationwide, the potential to positively influence reimbursement multiplies on a national level.

May is Melanoma Awareness Month

Melanoma is the most serious form of skin cancer.   However, if recognized and treated early, it is nearly 100 percent curable.  If not treated early,  the cancer can advance and spread to other parts of the body, becoming difficult to treat and potentially fatal.   While melanoma is not the most common of the skin cancers, it does cause the most deaths.  The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008, there will be 8,420 fatalities, 5,400 in men and 3,020 in women in the U.S. The number of new cases of melanoma is estimated at 62,480; of these, 34,950 will be in men and 27,530 in women.
