SmartPlanet talks with Stan Sheetz about technology, drive-thrus, cash handling
ALTOONA, Pa. -- Stan Sheetz, president and CEO of Altoona, Pa.-based Sheetz Inc., sat down with San Francisco-based CBS Interactive's SmartPlanet.com for a Q&A session on convenience. SmartPlanet.com is an online forum for green business and technology ideas.
The interview covered topic such as the 368-store chain's latest use of technology, why Sheetz does not want managers counting money and what he does when he stops at one of his company's locations.

QuikTrip on 'Best' List
Retailer makes Fortune's "Best Companies to Work For" list for 8th year
TULSA, Okla. -- For the eighth straight year, QuikTrip has captured a spot on Fortune's list of the "100 Best Companies to Work For," coming in at No. 41. Last year, it was ranked at No. 27.
The c-store and gasoline retailer made the list because "new employees at this Midwest chain of c-stores are taken under the wing of mentors, who work with them for two weeks," said the report. It added, "Full-time turnover is 12% (unheard of in the industry), and the company maintains an IT staff of 79 to keep things running."

PDQ Founder Passes Away
Jacobsen was NACS president in 1972; built major Midwest c-store chain
MIDDLETON, Wis. -- Samuel J. Jacobsen, who was born to immigrant parents and raised on a produce farm and went on to found PDQ Food Stores, one of the most successful c-store chains in the Midwest, died of heart failure Monday at 84.
A charter member of NACS, Jacobsen served as the association's president in 1972.
