Industry Mobilizes for Haiti
Retailers, suppliers react to disaster with fundraising campaigns, missions
ROCKFORD, Ill. -- Dan Arnold, president of Rockford, Ill.-based Road Ranger, flew his private plane Friday to Haiti to bring a Rockford missionary group home after the earthquake on Tuesday. He was accompanied by Heartland Community Church directional leader Mark Bankord. A 12-person Heartland contingent of young adults have been in Haiti since January 6 providing aid to Northwest Haiti Christian Mission.
Arnold's actions are just part of the petroleum/c-store industry's reaction to the disaster. Large and medium-sized c-store and oil companies, as well as small companies and single stations have announced relief campaigns. Industry suppliers have also stepped up to the plate with help.

Walgreens to Get Fresh
Drug store chain plans to offer fresh food, prepared meals
DEERFIELD, Ill. -- Walgreen Co. plans to offer fresh foods and prepared meals to draw "time-starved" shoppers to its more than 7,000 stores, taking on supermarkets, c-stores and other retailers. The drug store chain has been talking with foodmakers including Unilever, Nestle and Sara Lee about creating private-label and branded products, Bryan Pugh, vice president of merchandising for Walgreens and former Fresh & Easy executive, said.
"Everyone is time-starved, and we have the most convenient 7,000 locations in the U.S.," Pugh said. "They're on-the-way-home destinations that are easy to get in and out of and will provide a good value."

QuikTrip 'Invades' Tucson
1st local QuikTrip sets up shop; 3 more set to open before May
TUCSON, Ariz. -- QuikTrip opened its first c-store in Tucson, Ariz., Wednesday night. It was supposed to open Thursday morning, but "we were just standing around taking pictures, we were ready to go, and finally we just took the barricades down and let them in...about 9:00 p.m." Wednesday, Troy DeVos, QuikTrip's director of real estate, said. DeVos has been living in Tucson the last two years preparing for QuikTrip's "invasion."
This is the first of the Tulsa, Okla.-based chain's four combination gas station and c-stores set to open in Tucson before late April. But there likely are many more to come.
