Petroleum Industry Preparedness
Associations team up to help bolster consumer confidence

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Petroleum Marketers Association of America is participating in an industry effort to promote consumer confidence in petroleum, the group said. The effort includes the American Automobile Association and the American Petroleum Institute, the National Association of Convenience Stores, the National Association of Truckstop Operators, the Society of Independent Gasoline Marketers of America and the Service Station Dealers of America.

The coalition of associations plans to release a joint statement shortly following the outbreak of any conflict in Iraq in an effort to dissuade consumers from panic buying of gasoline, PMAA said.

Chevron Says “Aloha”
Puts Hawaiian dealer-ops up for sale

HONOLULU -- ChevronTexaco Corp. has put all 61 of its dealer-operated Chevron-branded gasoline stations in Hawaii up for sale, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The San Ramon, Calif.-based company said that the move is part of a shift to improve Chevron's efficiency. A Chevron spokesperson said that the stations were not selling enough gasoline, and that the company was not getting sufficient rent.

Cornering Convenience?

BATON ROUGE, La. -- The corner drug store has converted the busy intersection of Main Street USA into Drug Store Corner USA, according to the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report. It is all part of a turf war designed to cash in on the aging of America.

Eckerd, Walgreens and Rite Aid are the big players in Baton Rouge--and elsewhere in the U.S.--with 32 stores among them in that market. They battle each other, often from across the street, at prime “hard corners” all over the city, said the report. Gasoline stations and convenience stores once dominated those spots, but no longer.
