Tire Not Spinning Its Wheels
U.S. big boxes forcing Canadian retailer to pump up gas, convenience presence

TORONTO -- Facing competition from big U.S. retailers on both merchandise and gasoline, Canadian Tire Corp. has responded by expanding its store presence and is now pushing to raise its profile at the gasoline pumps, said Reuters.

With 212 “gas bars” or kiosk-type fueling and convenience centers currently in operation, Canadian Tire hopes to eventually furnish nearly all of its 454 stores with petroleum units and increase sales in a gasoline market dominated by the big oil companies. The company is also working on a new expanded format for its gas bars as it tries to squeeze extra revenue from customers who have already been lured into their parking lots.

Swiftys Slowly Reopening
New owners revitalize formerly shuttered locations

BILOXI, Miss. -- Southern Oil Co. will reopen a total of eight former Swifty Serve convenience stores in Mississippi, reported WLOX-TV. Two are in Gulfport, one is in Biloxi, one is in Ocean Springs, one is in Pascagoula and three are in Gautier, said the report.

Nearly two-dozen stores closed six months ago, when Swifty Serve filed for bankruptcy. Now Norman Barrentine's Collins-based Southern Oil is bringing some of the stores back to life. “We have 21 stores throughout the state already,” he said. “We needed a few more on the coast.”
