WiFi at WebDonald's
“Hot spots” coming to restaurants, as well as c-stores, other retail sites

OAK BROOK, Ill. -- In a further sign of the spread of wireless Internet technology, McDonald's restaurants in three U.S. cities will offer one hour of free high-speed access to anyone who buys a combination meal, reported the Associated Press. Ten units in Manhattan began offering wireless WiFi, or 802.11b, Internet access today.

By year's end, McDonald's will extend the access to 300 McDonald’s restaurants in New York City, Chicago and a yet-unannounced California town, said McDonald's spokesperson Lisa Howard.

Ahold USA Assurances
U.S. grocery, c-store company seeks to reassure suppliers

CHANTILLY, Va. -- Supermarket and convenience store parent company Ahold USA Inc. has mounted a campaign to reassure suppliers and customers in the wake of a major accounting scandal at its parent, Amsterdam-based Royal Ahold NV, said the Washington Post.

Since the Dutch company announced it had overstated earnings by at least $500 million in the past two years, a small number of suppliers that do business with Ahold's U.S. grocery chains have asked for changes in their payment plans, said Barry Scher, Ahold USA's vice president of public affairs.

N.Y. to Address Tax-Free Sales
Bills would seek to gain $1 billion tax loss, close budget deficit

ALBANY, N.Y. – New York State Senate Republicans and a business group yesterday called on the state to tax Internet sales – particularly tobacco sales -- and pledged to pressure the Governor to enforce tax laws on Native American merchants.

According to a report in the Albany Times Union this morning, the state Senate unanimously passed a bill Tuesday that would add New York to the growing list of states seeking congressional help in finding ways to let states with different tax structures charge a uniform sales tax for Internet purchases.
