Hawaiian Retailers Skip Taxes
Did retailers lie about tobacco sales?
HONOLULU -- The attorney general for Hawaii said his state was being ripped off to the tune of more than $20 million a year by local tobacco retailers who allegedly smuggled in cigarettes or lied about sales to avoid taxes, a local TV station reports.
Until the state started requiring tax stamps on cigarette packs, the state had no idea how many black-market cigarettes were being sold. Local KITV reports that now authorities know and they realize they were being taken advantage of. "The numbers are so astronomical that you know that there was no compliance before," Attorney General Earl Anzai said.

Coke's Red Can Gets a Makeover
Packaging to take on traditional look
ATLANTA -- Coca-Cola’s famous red can is getting a new look, The Wall Street Journal reports. The change goes into effect worldwide in 2003.
The new label and can will still be red, and the basic packages will remain the same. But the company is abandoning a "splash graphic" design that it has used since the beginning of 2000 and returning to a more traditional look.
