VIRTUAL STORE TOUR
Cravin' for Changes
Family Express re-invents its foodservice program -- and changes some industry perceptions, too

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Already one of the Midwest’s best, Family Express is undergoing a re-invention of sorts, and is changing the perception of the typical convenience store along with it.

Smokes, cokes, chips and beef jerky – sure they’re all there, but how about the highest-quality fresh fruit, wrap sandwiches, fresh salads and even gourmet-style meats and cheeses? Got that too. As part of its new fresh-food program, Cravin’s Market, Family Express has revamped its foodservice offering and has beefed up its store-delivery schedule, working with a central distribution center to ensure frequent delivery of fresh products to its stores – in branded trucks no less.

Land of Cheap Smokes?
W.Va. gov. considering cigarette tax hike

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Saying that West Virginia needs to fund its Medicaid program and doesn’t need a reputation as a place to go buy cheap cigarettes, Governor Bob Wise said last week that he is inclined to push for an increase in the state’s cigarette tax next year, reports the Charleston Gazette.

Wise is trying to head off a projected $200 million hole in the state’s 2003 to 2004 budget, caused primarily by double-digit inflation in Medicaid and Public Employees Insurance Agency costs, and by lower-than-projected returns on pension fund investments because of the downturn in the stock market.

Yes; it's the only way to offer top-quality food products.

Possibly, but only among chains with extensive foodservice operations.

Only in a handful of chains.
