The Big Reveal: Governor's Final May Revise Unveiled This Afternoon
By Paul McIntosh, Executive Director pmcintosh@counties.org When Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger sailed into office in a historic recall election nearly seven years ago, the State of California faced an 18-month $38 billion budget deficit. Today, the Governor is faced with the unenviable task of proposing a plan for closing a budget shortfall of $19.1 billion for 2010-11, following several difficult budget cycles and the imposition of dramatic spending reductions and temporary tax increases. Early this afternoon, he will release his final May Revision. The news will likely be grim and the proposals undoubtedly painful – the word out of the Governor’s Office has been that the revised spending plan will contain “very terrible cuts.”
