CSAC Joins Coalition Event to Restore Child Welfare Services Funding
By Paul McIntosh, Executive Director pmcintosh@counties.org As part of a major effort to ask legislators to restore $133 million in ongoing funding for Child Welfare Services (CWS), CSAC joined with a diverse coalition in an event on Wednesday, April 28 that featured a rally on the Capitol steps attended by more than 100 foster and emancipated youth, as well as Assembly Members Jim Beall, Mariko Yamada, Bonnie Lowenthal, Roger Niello, Danny Gilmore, and Paul Fong. Twenty-seven of the youth were then paired with legislators for “Take a Foster Youth to the Capitol.” The event culminated in a hearing before the Assembly Budget Subcommittee No. 1 on Health and Human Services. Supervisor Roger Dickinson, Sacramento County, testified on behalf of counties. His testimony detailed the cuts that the county has made as a result of the vetoed funds. Committee members voted unanimously to restore the funding to the CWS budget.
