Conference Committee to meet Labor Day Weekend on State’s Water Crisis

With only eight days left until the adjournment of the regular Legislative Session, the Legislature is tackling one of the state’s most politically charged issues: water.  A conference committee with members from both the Assembly and Senate – including Democrats and Republicans – held its first meeting on September 2.  This water conference committee has promised to meet every day through Labor Day weekend in search of a solution to the state's water crisis.

Legislature Sends Governor Measure to Maintain Healthy Families Program
The Legislature passed a bipartisan measure on September 3 that will help address the funding shortfall in the Healthy Families Program.  AB 1422, by Assembly Speaker Karen Bass, left the Assembly floor on 62-5 vote and is headed to the Governor’s desk for his action. The Senate sent the measure to the Assembly on September 2 on a bipartisan vote.

Property Taxes Might Drop Further
This week, the state Board of Equalization (BOE) sent a letter to county assessors (available here) warning that the growth factor for property taxes might be negative for the first time since Proposition 13 passed in the late 1970s.
