Counties Urged to Join National Effort on Inmate Medical Care
CSAC Supports NACo’s Advocacy on the Continuity of Government-Provided Medical Coverage for Detainees By Steve Keil, CSAC Interim Executive Director skeil@counties.org CSAC is strongly supporting the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) advocacy effort on inmate medical care. Specifically, NACo wishes to address federal laws that impede the continuity of government-provided medical coverage for persons detained in a state or local facility. The responsibility for jail inmates’ medical care in these facilities falls to counties. An interruption of medical benefits — and delays in re-enrollment that individuals typically experience once released from detention — can create serious problems both for the individual and for the county.
