Look and Feel Great for the Holidays
Tips for surviving seasonal strains on mind and body
by Nicholas V. Perricone, M.D.
The start of November heralds major changes, both in the climate and in the pace of our daily lives. From now until the New Year, we may find ourselves socializing with friends and family members we’ve not seen since the last holiday season.
Shopping, parties, and a seemingly endless round of activity can take its toll on our nervous system, our health, and our skin. To help halt the damage before it begins, this month’s newsletter includes tips for achieving physical and mental balance, and ensuring that your skin looks radiant and glowing.
- Get enough sleep (most people need eight hours)
- Give your skin a boost with topical antioxidants
- Try to minimize stress in your life
- Stop drinking coffee
- Drink green tea
- Set aside 15 or 20 minutes a day for yoga, meditation, or prayer. It is a well-established fact that these types of activities significantly lower levels of cortisol (a major stress hormone).
- Eat adequate protein
- Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
- Take the nutritional supplements recommended in The Perricone Prescription.
Let’s examine some of these bullet points in greater depth: Give Coffee a Break · Don’t Be Sleep Deprived · Minimize Stress I’ve grouped these three guidelines together because stress, sleep deprivation, and coffee all raise levels of a stress hormone known as cortisol. Cortisol is essential for maintaining homeostasis during acute forms of stress, like fear, physical trauma, and extreme physical exertion. But a problem arises when cortisol is present for long periods of time and in excess quantities—which happens when we suffer from stress, drink coffee, or do not get enough sleep.
Chronically high cortisol levels can:
- Increase body fat, especially in the abdominal region
- Thin the skin
- Depress the immune system
- Elevate blood sugar
- Cause bone loss
- Be toxic to brain cells
In short, when we have chronically high cortisol levels we run the risk of acquiring wrinkles, excess weight, and a depressed mood!
Topical antioxidants for a special holiday glow Even with the best intentions, we can overeat, indulge in the wrong foods and beverages, and stay up too late during this busy and festive season. While nothing can replace a healthy lifestyle and anti-inflammatory diet, topical antioxidants can go a long way ...
