Message from the Editor
Welcome to the late-summer edition of Skin Science Update! Dr. Perricone's feature article ("Smoother Skin/Slimmer Shape") addresses the nutritional aspects of weight loss, and tackles an after-effect that many women face—sagging skin on face and body. And, in "Selecting Salmon," he alerts you to important safety news about farmed salmon.
 |

And, on Friday, September 26, Dr. Perricone appears on ABC-TV's "The View" with Barbara Walters.

Smoother skin—and a slimmer shape?
Many find a positive side effect of nutritional skin care
by Nicholas V. Perricone, M.D.
One of the often-unexpected yet welcome benefits of following the dietary guidelines in The Perricone Prescription is a loss of excess weight. Many men and women discover (often for the first time) that they lose weight and gain energy without self-denial, hunger or feelings of deprivation. In fact, they often report that they are actually eating more food and at more frequent intervals.
What’s the secret? Keep your blood sugar levels even while keeping your metabolism stimulated. Sudden upward spikes in blood sugar levels—caused by eating sweet or starchy foods (e.g., pasta, potatoes, pastries, candy, soda, juice)—actually prevent us from burning fat because they place a "lock" on our cell’s fat-burning mechanism. Also, when we go for long periods without eating, our metabolisms all but .....

Selecting salmon? Go wild ...
Research puts farmed salmon in a dim light
by Nicholas V. Perricone, M.D.
There have been many negative stories in the news recently about salmon. Is it a good or poor food choice? Because all salmon are not created equal, the answer is "yes and no." When salmon is harvested from its wild, pristine, natural habitat, it is one of the finest foods available. The same cannot be said about farmed salmon, which suffers from an inferior fatty acid profile. And, unlike wild salmon, recent research has found high levels of PCBs—a carcinogenic nerve toxin—in farmed salmon (Both problems derive from their diet of commercial salmon feed.)
To learn more about why I always recommend wild Alaskan salmon and not farmed salmon, visit Environmental Media Services (www.ems.org). You can find more information and great salmon products at www.vitalchoice.com—a leading purveyor of premium wild Alaskan salmon, tuna, halibut, and more. Much to my delight, they even offer a "Perricone Pack" that contains Alaskan salmon and wild, organic blueberries—two indispensable components of the Perricone Prescription. And, you can find canned wild salmon in supermarkets year round—just make sure the can is stamped ALASKA on the top. Warm regards, Nicholas V. Perricone, MD
