A Dynamic Healing Duo
by Anne Sellaro, Executive Editor

Welcome to the first 2003 edition of Skin Science Update. In this issue, Dr. Perricone reveals the secrets of two complementary, healing cosmeceuticals. "A Winter’s Tale" relates the story of a skier whose dry, red, cracked hands inspired his discovery of the amazing restorative effects of PPC. In "Super Vitamin E for Dry Skin," Dr. Perricone reviews the powers of tocotrienols—highly emollient vitamin E compounds that enhance the benefits of PPC.

I’d also like to make note of a limited time offer of free UPS Ground shipping and handling on all orders of Weight Management and Skin Clear Supplements, when you choose our six-month Auto Ship option. Thank you for reading, and enjoy!

Regards,

Anne Sellaro

A Winter's Tale .... for All Seasons
How PPC restores environmentally stressed skin

Winter can certainly take its toll on skin, and this has been one of the coldest and most drying I can recall. But thanks to a patient named Rifka—a champion skier who spends every free minute on the slopes—I discovered a very effective way to repair the ravages wreaked by Old Man Winter.

Rifka came to me because her hand and fingers were very red, dry, and cracked. At 25 her hands looked years older than her age. I needed a targeted substance that could help heal Rifka’s skin. My research soon led me to ....

The "Super" Vitamin E for Dry Skin
The power of topical tocotrienols
by Nicholas Perricone, M.D.

The fat-soluble nutrient known as vitamin E is renowned for its ability to benefit skin and reduce the risk of coronary heart diseases and breast cancer. A powerful antioxidant and moisturizer, it is now just becoming available in skin and hair products—but usually not in its most beneficial form.

You see, vitamin E is actually a group of related molecules, and most of the vitamin E found in supplements and cosmetics is in the form of tocopherols. Recent research indicates that tocotrienols—a lesser known class of vitamin E compounds—possess unique properties that make them even more useful in some medical and cosmetic applications.

Intrigued by these discoveries, I devised a test to measure the effect tocotrienols would have on the cell membrane. I found that under laboratory conditions, tocotrienols are 40 to 60 times more effective in preventing free radical damage than the better-known tocopherols.

Tocotrienol-rich products help make hair shinier, help reduce the appearance of redness and flaking in severely dry skin, and help prevent nails from cracking.

I recommend that you give topical tocotrienols a try whenever your skin is under attack from dry air, searing sun, household cleaners, or any other environmental insults. And don’t forget to keep your diet rich in foods containing essential fatty acids. Together they will help to keep your skin looking and feeling its best at any time.

Warm regards,

Nicholas V. Perricone, MD
