Tips for surviving seasonal strains on mind and body

The start of November heralds major changes, both in the climate and in the pace of our daily lives. From now until the New Year, we may find ourselves socializing with friends and family members we’ve not seen since the last holiday season.

Shopping, parties, and a seemingly endless round of activity can take its toll on our nervous system, our health, and our skin.
To help halt the damage before it begins, this month’s newsletter includes tips for achieving physical and mental balance, and ensuring that your skin looks radiant and glowing.

  • Get enough sleep (most people need eight hours)
  • Give your skin a boost with topical antioxidants
  • Try to minimize stress in your life
  • Stop drinking coffee
  • Drink green tea
  • Set aside 15 or 20 minutes a day for yoga, meditation, or prayer. It is a well-established fact that these types of activities significantly lower levels of cortisol (a major stress hormone).
  • Eat adequate protein
  • Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
  • Take the nutritional supplements recommended in The Perricone Prescription.

Let’s examine some of these bullet points in greater depth:

Give Coffee a Break · Don’t Be Sleep Deprived · Minimize Stress
I’ve grouped these three guidelines together because stress, sleep deprivation, and coffee all raise levels of a stress hormone known as cortisol. Cortisol is essential for maintaining homeostasis during acute forms of stress, like fear, physical trauma, and extreme physical exertion. But a problem arises when cortisol is present for long periods of time and in excess quantities—which happens when we suffer from stress, drink coffee, or do not get enough sleep.

Chronically high cortisol levels can:

  • Increase body fat, especially in the abdominal region
  • Thin the skin
  • Depress the immune system
  • Elevate blood sugar
  • Cause bone loss
  • Be toxic to brain cells

In short, when we have chronically high cortisol levels we run the risk of acquiring wrinkles, excess weight, and a depressed mood!

Topical antioxidants for a special holiday glow
Even with the best intentions, we can overeat, indulge in the wrong foods and beverages, and stay up too late during this busy and festive season. While nothing can replace a healthy lifestyle and anti-inflammatory diet, topical antioxidants can go a long way in repairing the damage and restoring a look of radiant health:

  • Topical treatments that combine alpha lipoic acid and DMAE wake up tired, stressed skin.
  • Vitamin C ester is unsurpassed in diminishing the appearance of fine lines, while revitalizing skin and restoring the appearance of firmness.
  • To complete the picture-perfect face, finish with a topical that contains both polyenylphosphatidyl choline and a potent form of vitamin E known as tocotrienols that's 40 to 50 times stronger than the more common alpha tocopherol form. This dynamic combination has a powerful anti-inflammatory effect, and is a natural emollient that will rapidly restore the rosy glow long missing from your skin.

Switch to green tea
Green tea is rich in polyphenolswhich are some of Nature’s strongest natural antioxidants. To quickly recap, an antioxidant is a substance that fights physical and mental signs of aging and disease. How? By decreasing inflammation on a cellular level that is initiated by free radicals. Inflammation can cause heart disease, certain types of cancer, and many other life-threatening diseases. Perhaps worst of all from a dermatological standpoint, it also causes wrinkled, sagging skin.

Green tea has additional benefits, including:

  • Green tea boosts the immune system, and the people in countries that consume large amounts (four or more cups a day) boast much lower rates of cancer and heart disease.
  • Green tea can boost weight loss by decreasing the absorption of fats, and by increasing calorie burning. (As our waistlines can attest come January, the holiday season encourages unwanted weight-gain, because so many seasonal activities focus around food.)
  • A compound in tea called theonine blocks the negative effects of caffeine, while acting as a natural mood elevator and promoting feelings of well-being. Theonine is protective to brain cells in that it prevents a negative reaction called cytotoxicity, which can lead to the death of brain cells.

Get enough protein
Protein is critical to your health and your beauty. In my efforts to find answers to why we age, I reasoned that if aging and aging skin are characterized by the breakdown of cells, the antidote to aging might be cellular repair. Protein is essential to cellular repair. Why? Because the building blocks of our cells are composed of amino acids
. As protein is digested, it breaks down into amino acids, which our cells use to repair themselves. Without adequate protein, our bodies enter into an accelerated aging mode.

Many of my female patients are protein-deficient. Chicken and turkey are great sources of protein. However, if you want to feed your brain and your skin so that you think more clearly and look younger and more radiant, you need to eat fish—and not just any fish. The preferred fish are those richest in omega-3 essential fatty acids, which fight wrinkles, help keep skin supple, resilient, toned and youthful, and promote a clear, sharp mind and memory. Best choices? Wild Alaskan salmon, sardines, anchovies, mackerel, trout, herring, and halibut.

Not wild about fish? You can supplement your diet with fish oil capsules. Vegetarians can increase levels of omega-3’s by adding freshly ground flaxseed (and/or flax oil) to their diet. Nuts and seeds are also recommended.

Drink 8 to 10 glasses of water per day
Water will decrease inflammation in the body. Remember this important fact—even a partially dehydrated person will gain one pound of weight every six months. A special message to women and also to men and women body builders and weight lifters—you do not become bloated if you drink water. In fact, if you don’t drink water,
you cannot metabolize fat, nor can you flush wastes out of the cells. Simply put, if you do not drink water, your organs and cells cannot function properly.

A dehydrated body provokes the development of aging, inflammatory compounds. And, remember, the difference between a grape and a raisin is—you guessed it—water!

Avoid Fat-Free or Low-Fat Diets
This is not a blanket endorsement to run out for the nearest quarter-pounder with cheese! Meals like these are loaded with saturated fat, which is pro-inflammatory.

What I am recommending is the right kinds of fats—omega-3 essential fatty acids (EFAs), which possess anti-inflammatory properties. The richest dietary sources of omega-3 EFAs are wild Alaskan salmon and the other fish recommended above in the tips on protein. Other food sources include nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, walnuts, Macadamia, etc.), and seeds (flax, pumpkin, sunflower, etc.).

Be sure to include essential omega-3 fats at every meal and snack. If you do not have adequate levels of omega-3 EFAs in your diet, you will starve your skin and your brain, for the following reasons:

  • We need omega-3 fatty acids to burn the fats stored in our body
  • They keep our skin soft, supple and radiant
  • They enhance moisture retention from within
  • They assist in the repair of the natural moisture barrier of the skin
  • Our brains are chiefly composed of fat—dietary omega-3 EFAs ensure optimal brain function
  • They protect the body’s major organ systems, and support the immune system.

Buyer Beware: Many packaged foods labeled "low-fat" or "fat-free" are high in high-glycemic carbohydrates (sugars and staches) that promote inflammation and aging.

Take Nutritional Supplements
It is especially important to keep your body strong and healthy at this stressful time of year. Nutritional supplements that contain antioxidants—nature’s anti-inflammatories—can be of great help in slowing down the signs of aging for both face and body.

Our December newsletter will offer tips on holiday dining for great skin and introduce a revolutionary new peptide technology for serious rejuvenation of aging or damaged skin.
Thank you for reading .... as always, I welcome your comments and suggestions!

Warm regards,

Nicholas V. Perricone
