GRAMA Working Group Recommendations

The Working Group created to study Utah’s current Government Records Access and Management Act (GRAMA), had its final meeting on June 22nd. Their final recommendations are based on several months’ study of our current records laws and detailed inspection of the issues brought up in the now defunct HB477. For the most part, the working group recommends that current GRAMA laws be left intact, but they have identified a few changes.

Learning Through Experience: Utah’s Response to Ongoing Floods

The summer of 2011 began with a series of flood warnings for communities across Utah. The rising waters have impacted homes, farm land, and have recently prompted the National Weather Service to issue flood warnings for seven Utah counties. Previous crises and emergency events have provided lessons to Utah officials on what is and is not effective in disaster preparedness and response procedures. Some of these past lessons have been incorporated into the state’s response plans, and new lessons and implications for future responses are being discovered as the current flood water crisis continues.

May's ASPA luncheon featured David Patton, PhD, Director of the Utah Department of Health, who spoke about public administration in the 21st century. To address the topic, Dr. Patton contacted several respected members of Governor Herbert’s cabinet to ask what advice they would give to public administrators. He described their insights as well as some overall themes that emerged.

Vehicle emissions control plays an important role in limiting air pollution and meeting clean air requirements of the Environmental Protection Agency, but many drivers see the emission testing process as an inconvenience.
