Jail as a Condition of Felony Probation: A Utah Study

Although the literature has found that incarceration generally has no effect on recidivism, alternative sentencing practices have been found to have some reductions on recidivism rates. A new study by the Utah Criminal Justice Center examined the use of jail as a condition of probation throughout the State of Utah and the effects of time in jail on recidivism. The Impact of the Recession on Utah’s Nonprofit Economy

This past February, the Community Foundation of Utah surveyed the state’s charities to see how the nonprofit sector was faring during the recession. At the end of June, the Foundation re-surveyed charities to compare how the nonprofit sector is doing four months later. The first survey revealed Utah’s nonprofits were pessimistic about the future. More than half of the charities did not think they would have the resources needed to meet the increasing demand for services. Seventy percent thought that the next six months would bring increased hardship for their clients and their agencies. They were right.
