Almost four thousand Utahns die from heart disease and stroke every year, yet two thirds of those never make it to the hospital, despite the fact that receiving treatment within the first three hours of an attack can dramatically improve the outcomes. The average annual charges for hospitalization and emergency room visits in Utah are $47 million, most of which is paid from Medicare funds. Who is at risk? What is being done in Utah to improve these figures? What can policymakers do to help?

As concurrent enrollment gains popularity there are rising concerns about access and quality of the programs.

Exploring the Bureaucratic Demon

I recently discovered a computer game called “Bureaucracy,” where the player changes address and confronts a series of resulting bureaucratic challenges. The game has a level of “blood pressure” which rises and falls with the level of frustration, and when a certain level is reached, an aneurysm occurs. This is where the game ends.
