The Utah Charitable Nonprofit Sector Report
2002

The nonprofit sector across the entire United States is large and growing. Between 1977 and 1997, for example, the number of public charities (those nonprofits with the 501(c)(3) Internal Revenue code exemption designation) grew from just under 300,000 to just under 700,000; from 1987 to 1997 while the number of organizations on average grew by 26 %, the number of public charities increase by approximately 64%. The nonprofit sector now comprises between 7 – 8% of the GDP and 10% of the workforce in the United States (Weitzman et al., 2002). Utah’s nonprofit sector is also vibrant and growing. As of November 2003, there are 4,557 registered charities in the state (including congregations and organizations with annual gross receipts under $25,000). Of those, 1,589 public charities file the 990 informational returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Based on those returns, we know that the gross receipt of Utah’s nonprofits totaled nearly $5.03 billion in 2002 and those organizations had assets in the $4.6 billion range. In order to make appropriate public policies regarding the sector, government and those nonprofit organizations that makeup the sector must be informed about the economic impact of Utah’s nonprofits. This study seeks to fill the gap in information that currently exists.
