The weather can get downright unpleasant in the fall and winter, but that doesn’t mean you need to put the kibosh on your planned family outings. New England is home to a number of great indoor entertainment options, serving up everything from bowling and arcades to go-karting and laser tag.
Urban Air Adventure Park
With locations in South Portland, Maine; Bellingham, Massachusetts; and Orange, Connecticut, Urban Air Adventure Park is New England’s premier place for family-friendly fun. There’s a wide enough variety of things to do at Urban Air to make it perfectly suited to even the most finicky guest.
If you want something competitive yet laid back, there’s bowling. For something a bit more high-intensity, there’s laser tag and go-karting. If you’ve always wanted to try sky diving but don’t have the courage to leap out of a moving plane, Urban Air’s indoor sky diving area lets you experience the excitement without the stress. Once you’ve had your fill of adventure and need a quick breather, you can head over to the Urban Air Cafe for a refreshment and a slice of pizza. Whatever your preference, Urban Air Adventure Park is fully equipped to meet it.
Funtageous Fun Center (Massachusetts)
Tyngsboro’s own Funtageous Fun Center earned the title of Best Family Fun Spot from the Lowell Sun, and it’s easy enough to see why the moment you step foot into this 15,000-square-foot venue. There’s no shortage of entertainment options at Funtageous, which boasts four different indoor attractions, a full arcade, rides for the kids and billiards for the adults. Among the most fun features at Funtageous are Time Freak, a time challenge arena that pits teams against one another in a race against the clock, and Balladium, which puts you behind an air cannon to see how many targets you can hit. For a more classic spin, Highway 66 Bowling offers just the right amount of competitiveness and challenge for all ages.
Portsmouth Escape Room (New Hampshire)
Where most indoor activities tend to put your physical skills to the test, Portland Escape Room challenges your problem-solving abilities. Portland Escape Room currently boasts three distinctly themed rooms — Westower’s Study, The Sunrise Killer Case and The Roswell Incident — that task you and your team with following clues and making your escape in under an hour. Westower’s Study is by far the most challenging of the three. Accommodating 2-10 players, it boasts a difficulty rating of 8 out of 10 and an escape rate of just 44 percent. Be sure to stop in this December when Portland Escape Room launches its newest offering, Merlin’s Trials.
R1 Indoor Karting Entertainment Center (Rhode Island)
If you have a need for speed, you can satisfy it at Lincoln’s R1 Indoor Karting Entertainment Center, which boasts the fastest indoor go-kart tracks in the United States. You’ll travel at speeds of up to 40 mph around R1’s new Mega Track, which boasts multiple levels and can be completed by a skilled driver in around 50 seconds. When you get hungry, you can pop into Fuel Restaurant and Sports Bar for a full-scale dining experience. Fuel offers everything from brick oven pizza and gourmet burgers to fish tacos and fried calamari, as well as adult beverages and dessert options.
Whatever ingredients you require in your recipe for fun, these and other indoor venues in New England offer just what you need. Don’t let rain or snow get you down; pack your family into the car and head out for a comfortable, climate-controlled afternoon of enjoyment.
