Trucks are measured first and foremost by their ability to move things from one place to another. Fortunately for the 2017 Ram 1500, this is an area it truly excels. The truck is available with various engine options: a standard 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that uses variable valve timing and thermal management to make 305 horsepower and 269 lb-ft of torque; and a 5.7-liter HEMI® V8, which leads the lineup by cranking out 395 horsepower and 410 lb-ft of torque.
When properly equipped, a 2017 Ram 1500 with a HEMI® under the hood can haul up to 1,900 pounds and tow up to 10,640 pounds, making it easy to tackle any job that doesn’t require more heavy-duty vehicles like the Ram 2500 or Ram 3500.
That being said, a truck wouldn’t be of much use if it could only do a single big job once before breaking down, which is why the 2017 Ram 1500 (MSRP $26,495) is also designed to withstand the stress that it is expected to bear every day. Its high-strength steel frame is reinforced by eight ultra-tough crossmembers and features a hydroformed tubular front frame unit to help it withstand the toughest loads day in and day out.
The 2017 Ram 1500 is also designed to make towing and hauling easy for the driver. Hill Start Assist, for instance, is a driver-assist technology that detects when the truck is on an incline and maintains brake pressure when you move your foot to the accelerator, in order to prevent the truck from rolling backward. Additionally, features such as Trailer Sway Control and the easy-to-use integrated trailer hitch make towing jobs that much easier.
A big part of the 2017 Ram 1500’s excellent capability is its standard TorqueFlite® eight-speed automatic transmission, which not only bolsters low-speed acceleration but also increases fuel economy. A common misconception among drivers who have never owned trucks is that those who do must not care about efficiency. This is clearly not the case—after all, does anyone actually want to spend more at the gas station rather than less?
In this regard, the 2017 Ram 1500 deserves yet more recognition. When equipped with the Pentastar V6, it earns an estimated 25 miles per gallon on the highway. That kind of exceptional efficiency allows Ram 1500 owners to not only save at the pump, but also focus longer on the task at hand without having to go for a detour.
While the 2017 Ram 1500 is designed to look good both in and out, much of it is utilitarian in nature. The available, class-exclusive RamBox® Cargo Management System makes securely storing all sorts of items easier than ever before, while the wheel-to-wheel side steps not only help improve aerodynamics and efficiency but also make it easier to access the truck bed.
Nonetheless, the 2017 Ram 1500 still knows how to entertain. The Uconnect® 8.4 infotainment system, Voice Command and Hands-Free Calling capability, and heated and ventilated leather-trimmed bucket seats are just some of the many standard and available amenities that make it a real pleasure and convenience to drive a Ram 1500, whether at work or play.
Given all of this, it’s no surprise IHS Markit data has found Ram 1500 owners to be the most loyal of any half-ton pickup truck owners, or that IHS Automotive VIO registration data has confirmed there are more used Ram trucks today still on the roads than any other pickup truck brand. When you want a truck you can truly count on, the Ram 1500 is always the top choice.
