American Telesis on Top of New Federal Regulation
Over the next three years many health related businesses will need to incorporate a specialized HIPAA approved encryption solution for their information transport. Alternatives could include software, hardware, leased Private Lines or Frame Relay.

HIPAA regulations require that all individually identifiable health care information be protected to ensure privacy and confidentiality when electronically stored, maintained, or transmitted. The very openness of the Internet and e-mail makes it inherently insecure, opening the door to security breaches, information interception and potentially devastating liabilities.

Network firewalls and conventional security solutions can help secure content stored on the network.
Information protection, once it has left the network requires an additional layer of security on the messages themselves. This security needs to be applied not only to communications between health care organizations and patients but also between health care organizations themselves.

All major health care providers are required to be compliant with HIPAA privacy and security regulations
by April 21, 2005. Small health care agencies must be compliant by April 21, 2006. Between now and then, these individuals and institutions will be evaluating their telecommunication requirements to determine whether to adopt encryption or utilize a Private Line or Frame Relay alternative. In some environments, a combination of both methods would be most effective. Either way, this should open the door to many new data transport opportunities within the health care industry.

Now is the time to start looking for these applications and understanding the rules and regulations that are dictating these changes. Some additional sites to review these regulations are:
