Alumni Success Story: Maryland Student Graduate Profile

At age 23, Suzanne Jones has accomplished more than some adults twice her age. When talking about her accomplishments, Suzanne credits her experiences in the Cisco Networking Academy, as well as her drive to achieve the very best in a career in technology. In 2001, as a senior in high school, Suzanne had already earned her Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA®) certification, and was enrolled in the Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP®) coursework at Charles County Career and Technology Center (now North Point High School). During that time, she also completed an internship at Comcast, a leading cable and Internet provider. After graduating high school, Suzanne joined the United States Air Force Reserves, while working in the information technology (IT) field as a network engineer.

Collaboration: The Key to Education Evolution

by Gene Longo, Manager, Learning & Development, Cisco Global Education

This network-skills gap poses a serious threat for public-sector and private organizations alike that find themselves relying ever more heavily on technology to meet their basic business requirements.

Cisco Announces New CCNA Certification Concentrations

The new CCNA concentrations, CCNA Security, CCNA Voice, and CCNA Wireless, are role-based certifications created with today’s IT professional in mind. Designed to build upon Cisco’s most popular career certification, the CCNA, these highly specialized, associate-level concentrations offer individuals a career stepping stone in the converged technologies that make up today’s sophisticated networks. In addition, IT professionals wishing to broaden or add specialized skills to their technology expertise while differentiating themselves in the marketplace will find these specializations a valuable addition.

  • CCNA Voice validates skills in voice-over-IP (VoIP) technologies such as IP PBX, IP telephony, handset, call control, and voicemail solutions. Candidates also get exposure to Cisco Unified Communications architecture and design, covering mobility, presence, and Cisco TelePresence™ applications.
  • CCNA Security validates skills that include troubleshooting and monitoring of Cisco network devices to maintain integrity, confidentiality, and availability of data.
  • CCNA Wireless validates skills in the configuration, implementation, and support of wireless LANs, specifically those networks using Cisco equipment.

Leading Market Research Firm Study Shows Pervasive Networking Talent Shortfall in North America

Cisco Learning Institute commissioned IDC to expand their research on IT skills gaps in the United States and Canada with a focus on networking skills. IDC’s estimates suggest that demand for professionals with computer networking skills will outpace the supply of workers with those skills by an average of 8 percent per year through 2011, amounting to a shortage of about 60,000 full-time workers each year.
