Welcome From Gene Longo
Ten years ago, Cisco launched the Cisco Networking Academy on Capitol Hill. This month, we returned to Washington, D.C. to celebrate the success of the Networking Academy in the last decade and to focus on the exciting direction of the program in the decade ahead.
Our honored guests during the two-day Tenth Anniversary Salute included 102 graduates and instructors representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia. These delegates came from a community of more than 2600 academies, 4000 instructors, and 460,000 graduates. We also welcomed the many guests who joined us for the event, including leaders from Cisco, education, government, and business.
The event was an exciting opportunity to experience the breadth and reach of the Cisco Networking Academy as we celebrate the unique public-private partnership that is the foundation of this program. In addition, it provided a forum to discuss the importance of technical education in maintaining U.S. competitiveness in a 21st century global economy. In keeping with that theme, in this issue of the newsletter we’ve highlighted a thought-provoking article written by Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The article calls out the “Quiet Crisis” of the increasing shortage of scientific and technical talent in our country.
The Tenth Anniversary Salute also kicked off a campaign that will be rolled out over the next year in which we plan to host a number of state-level tenth anniversary events. The first state event was held in Indiana the day after our Capitol Hill event. We will keep you informed of upcoming events, but we also encourage you to contact your Area Academy Manager if you would like to participate in the planning and implementation of an event in your state.
In this edition of the newsletter, you will find a number of links to information about the Cisco Networking Academy, our Tenth Anniversary event in Washington, D.C., and our newly launched curricula. I encourage you to explore them.
It has been an exciting decade and promises to be even more exciting in the decade ahead.
Here’s to the next ten years!
Best regards,
Gene

Falling Short in Producing American Scientific and Technical Talent
http://www.rpi.edu/homepage/quietcrisis/index.html
by By Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
There is a quiet crisis building in the United States—a crisis that could jeopardize the nation’s preeminence and well-being. The crisis has been mounting gradually, but inexorably, over several decades.
If permitted to continue unmitigated, it could reverse the global leadership Americans currently enjoy.
The crisis stems from the gap between the nation’s growing need for scientists, engineers, and other technically skilled workers, and its production of them.

Promoting IT Careers: Changing World, Changing Words
By Peter Joyce, Manager of Talent Transformation, Cisco Worldwide Channels
It is back-to-school time. In my early days as a young student, one of the cornerstones of my school experience was the study of words—how to spell them, how to define them, and how to use them in a sentence. Today I am no longer a young student, but I find myself struggling with some of those words that I was led to believe had solid definitions. No one ever told me that using words in context would often be the object of debate.
Training Versus Education
Two words that are frequently debated in today’s education circles are “education” and “training.” Aha! You say these are pretty much the same? Well, that does not seem to be true to many education professionals, and the debate becomes heated at times. To find the definitive resolution, I turned to the 21st century’s ultimate resource, Wikipedia.
