Promoting IT Careers: Changing World, Changing Words
By Peter Joyce, Manager of Talent Transformation, Cisco Worldwide Channels

It is back-to-school time. In my early days as a young student, one of the cornerstones of my school experience was the study of words—how to spell them, how to define them, and how to use them in a sentence. Today I am no longer a young student, but I find myself struggling with some of those words that I was led to believe had solid definitions. No one ever told me that using words in context would often be the object of debate.

Training Versus Education

Two words that are frequently debated in today’s education circles are “education” and “training.” Aha! You say these are pretty much the same? InfoWorld: It Takes a Wired Village
http://www.infoworld.com/article/07/06/07/wired-vi...

It's impressive that there are two billion people connected to the Internet, but having four billion not connected is a social issue.

Technology companies are reaching out to those four billion people to connect them to the Web and its advantages of better education, a stronger economy, more political power, and a better life.

SearchCIO Australia: IT Still Trying to Find What Women Want
http://www.searchcio.com.au/topics/article.asp?Doc...

According to the consultancy, women—with their superior communication and listening skills—are “innately better suited than men” to navigate the new global economy. Yet, the imbalance of power in IT is rapidly driving women away. In addition, while women control or influence 80% of consumer spending decisions, 90% of IT products and services are designed by men—a lopsided formula for “going out of business,” says Gartner.

If organisations don't pay heed to their female technology workforce, Gartner argues, women will take their IT acumen and good ideas elsewhere, meaning the looming IT skills crisis just got 50% worse.

Financial Express: IT Firms Open Knowledge Window to Bridge Skill Gap
http://www.financialexpress.com/news/IT-firms-open...

The IT industry, which is struggling against an appreciating rupee, high rate of attrition and lack of employable talent, is all set to bridge the demand-supply gap and make fresh graduates ready for the industry. IT companies are, in fact, nurturing their association with educational institutions-both management and technical-to ensure a steady inflow of technically qualified software programmers.
