Development Director
Organizational Overview
Mount St. Joseph-St.
Elizabeth is a multi-service agency with a 150 year history of providing
residential and related social services to San Francisco’s troubled
families. We provide high quality, client-centered
care to a diverse population of children, adolescent, adult women, and their
families who are the most vulnerable in our community. Our mission is to promote family unity by
empowering families through their process of recovery to develop skills for a
healthy life.
The programs under the Epiphany Center umbrella include:
- Intensive
Outpatient Drug Treatment for
women, with and without children, providing life skills training,
individual counseling, drug education, support and parenting groups;
- Epiphany
House provides a safe and
supportive home for women and mothers of children less than 3 years of age
with at least one month of sobriety;
- Epiphany
Residential Program offers
housing for pregnant and postpartum women over 18 and their very young
children;
- Parent-Child
Center to provide early
therapeutic intervention childcare service to very young children;
- In-home
Supportive Services to women at
risk of losing custody of their children;
- Pediatric
Clinic available to all program
participants providing immunizations, child and sick child care;
- Family
Treatment Program providing
mental health services for children up to 18 years of age.
These programs help rebuild
the lives of women who are addicted to drugs and alcohol, as well as the lives
of their children. The women of
Epiphany come from all walks of life and all socio-economic and cultural
backgrounds.
General Qualifications:
Mount St. Joseph – St.
Elizabeth is seeking an experienced fundraiser to lead development efforts in
support of our Epiphany Center Programs. We are looking for someone with a
strong grounding in fundraising fundamentals and a proven track-record of
success, who can help Mount St. Joseph-St. Elizabeth reach its full potential
in support of its mission-driven work. The right person will appreciate the solid history of support that
the organization has enjoyed over time, and will see the opportunity to help
grow a mature fundraising program.
A strong candidate would
need to have:

At least 5 years of
experience in a diverse fundraising program;
- Established track record in major gift giving,
corporate support, foundation grants, annual campaigns and special event
planning;
- Ability to identify, cultivate, acquire and
steward gifts from individuals and foundations;
- Interest in generating creative solutions balanced
by a demonstrated attention to detail;
- Experience supervising other staff and volunteers
and facilitating team-work in support of a diverse fund-raising program;
- Superior communication, organization and
interpersonal skills that can articulate a compelling case for the mission-driven
services provided by the agency;
- Excellent writing skills and knowledge of grant
writing and charitable giving in the non-profit arena;
- Proficiency in using computer software and
knowledge of donor base management;
- Ability to mobilize others to fulfill the vision
of the organization with a display of passion and optimism.
Essential Duties:
Individual Major Donors
One important growth
opportunity for Mount St. Joseph – St. Elizabeth lies with the development of
our individual major donor program. We
have a solid base of long-time, loyal supporters as well as a new generation of
leaders and donors. An essential part
of the Development Director’s job responsibities will be to build the major
donor program:
- Work with the Executive Director and the
Foundation Board to develop a strategic plan for substantially expanding
the major donor program.
- Motivate and energize Board members to participate
in major donor fundraising activities;
- Develop a planned giving program for fundraising
through the St. Louise Society and other avenues.
Events
Mount St. Joseph – St.
Elizabeth raises a significant portion of its budget from two major events - an
annual Christmas Extravaganza hosted by the Auxiliary and a major Benefit and
Show at the Great American Music Hall organized by the Foundation Board. These two very different events provide
opportunities to keep past friends and supporters connected while reaching out
to new individual and showcasing the organization to potential donors:
- Help the event committees reach their
fundraising goals;
- Support the Auxiliary and Foundation Board in
planning and carrying out activities;
- Ensure that the events continue to be produced
in a way that is fun and meaningful for attendees, creating goodwill for
the organization and helping identify potential new donor and supporters;
- Strategize with the host committees how to keep
the events fresh over time and growing in their potential as fund and fun
raisers.
- Coordinate Christmas gift giving from churches
and corporations.
Foundations
Foundation and corporate
grants are a small but important part of the funding base for the
programs. The Development Director will
work with the Executive Director and the Foundation Board to significantly
develop this aspect of the over-all fundraising program:

Create a process of
researching, prioritizing, and producing successful grant proposals;
·
Involve organizational
staff and board members in efforts to arrange meetings with foundation staff
and to share their enthusiasm for the program;
·
Assure that grant
proposals are being submitted on a regular basis and potential funders
cultivated over time.
Database Management
Administrative
staff has primary responsibility for the organization’s database, currently in
eTapestry. The Development Director
will need to become familiar with the current database system, if not already,
and help determine if it meets the organization’s diverse marketing and fundraising
needs:

Evaluate the current
database system and make recommendations for how to assure it adequately
supports a diverse fundraising program, including one with increased emphasis
on donor development;
·
Develop protocols for
building the data base and assuring adequate follow-up with donors.
Capital Campaign
Mount St. Joseph – St.
Elizabeth’s Programs are housed in facilities that need on-going maintenance
and eventual seismic and other upgrades.
The Development Director will need to help move the organization closer
to launching a capital campaign:
- Develop a long range strategy for when and how
to commence a capital campaign:
- Create a plan, with the Executive Director and
Foundation Board, for how to lay the groundwork to a capital campaign;
- When appropriate, assemble the capital campaign
committee, solicit lead gifts, and launch the campaign.
Marketing
Epiphany Center Programs have
a solid track-record of success with those they serve and are very well
respected by those that know them. However, the program is not well known in the wider community and
its mission and program components not well understood. Improving the visibility of the programs is
a critically important part of strengthening the fund development program:
- Work with the Executive Director and program
staff to develop a multifaceted plan to raise the visibility of the
program;
- Ensure that the organization’s marketing
material – newsletter, website, brochures and other collateral – are
meeting the organizations fundraising needs;
- Oversee the quarterly publication of the monthly
newsletter;
- Plan and publish periodic newsletters making
known the work of the Agency.
Over-all Management
- Create annual fundraising plans, timelines and
budgets with clear financial goals and fundraising targets;
- Prepare and submit an annual Development and
Public Relations budget to the Business office;
- Build an effective development partnerships with
staff and board members;
- Participate in efforts to expand the Foundation Board
to include additional members who can help strengthen the fund development
efforts of the organization;
- Reports back to the Executive Director and
Foundation Board on progress on a regular basis, using the reports as a
management tool to monitor progress and make strategic decisions;
- Supervise fund development assistant;
- Help expand the pool of active volunteers and
other resources in support of the fund development plan;
- Communicate effectively with co-workers, clients
and personnel associated outside agencies;
- Effectively presents information to top
management, public groups, and the Boards of Directors.
Skills and Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years working in non-profit
fundraising or related field;
- Knowledge of non-profit fundraising fundamentals;
- Excellent all around management skills;
- Ability to get along with all kinds of people;
- Ability to think strategically in a changing
social service and funding environment;
- Highly productive worker who can also mobilize
others;
- Excellent time management skills;
- Must meet agency conditions for employment.
Salary and Benefits
Salary range $80,000 – $90,000,
depending on experience
Benefits package includes
vacation, sick leave, health and pension benefits.
