Making On-the-Job Training Performance-Based
Improving on the traditional “sit side-by-side” approach
Sometimes classroom-based instruction or e-learning solutions aren’t the right way to train a new employee. If you are bringing on someone who has been promoted or transferred, or if there is low turnover in a position, or if the department is small, on-the-job training (OJT) may be the best solution. However, many organizations continue to follow the “sit by Sally” approach where a new employee is paired with an experienced veteran who is charged with telling the new employee all she knows. Depending on how that training experience is designed, OJT can be either very effective--or completely ineffective.
