It takes more than competencies to transform performance
Many organizations develop competencies as a means of defining job performance. These competencies are usually high-level descriptions of desired behavior, such as “displays business acumen” or “works as a team player.” While these sets of competencies are customized for each organization, they are often so general that they could be applied to any management job in any industry. Most important, because the competencies are written in such vague terms, they don’t help guide desired performance.
