Coming Soon to a Theatre Near You: Four Must-See Movies
The 2010s film roster lines up everything from family flicks to action-packed remakes.

With blockbusters like Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Transformers and The Hangover, 2009 has been a year of big-budget action, adventure and comedy at the theatres. As usual, studios are well ahead of the game for 2010, promising to produce another year of spectacular sequels, as well as bold new screenplays. Here’s a look at some of the most highly anticipated films for the upcoming year:

  1. Alice in Wonderland: If you loved Tim Burton’s dark, whimsical interpretations of Edward Scissorhands and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, you’re in for another colourful journey throughout the world of Wonderland. Starring Burton’s favourite leading man, Johnny Depp, as well as his muse (and wife) Helena Bonham Carter, Alice in Wonderland is being shot using 3-D and performance capture technology. Look for IMAX showings, as well as regular features starting Friday, March 5.
  2. Iron Man 2: May 7 marks the date for this big action-adventure release. Still riding high from 2008’s first Iron Man film (which grossed over $500 million worldwide), Robert Downey, Jr. returns as the billionaire, crime-fighting Tony Stark. Mickey Rourke stars as comic book villain Whiplash, and Scarlett Johansson plays the seductive Natasha Romanoff. The second film of what will be an Iron Man trilogy, this thriller, based on Marvel Comics stories, is bound to be another box office success.
  3. The A-Team: Based on the popular 1980s television series, this 2010 remake follows a group of Iraq War vets looking to clear their names with the U.S. military for a crime they didn’t commit. Starring Bradley Cooper, Liam Neeson and Jessica Biel, the film includes chase scenes and major explosives, as well as some lighthearted comedy. With the intensity of films like Die Hard and The Bourne Identity in a contemporary cultural context, The A-Team will likely cause a stir when it premiers June 11.
  4. Tooth Fairy: Here’s one for the whole family. Starring wrestler-turned-comedic-actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, as well as the legendary Julie Andrews (better known as Mary Poppins), Tooth Fairy will have both kids and parents cracking up. The movie tells the story of Derek Thompson, a minor league hockey player known for knocking the teeth out of his opponents. When he trips up, Derek is sentenced to one week’s hard labour as a tooth fairy – and yes, the tutu, wings and magic wand are mandatory. The lighthearted plot is sure to charm, starting January 22.

Other major 2010 releases include thrillers like Shutter Island and Robin Hood. Kids, especially, will be pleased at this coming year’s selection; Shrek Forever After, Toy Story 3, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn are all wrapping up production. And of course, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I is sure to be a worldwide hit on November 19; Part II, the final instalment, will come out in July 2011. Although you may have a few more months of waiting before the film of your choice premiers, there are dozens of flicks to check out in the meantime – so start popping that popcorn and enjoy the show!
