Erate Year 10 Begins with New Opportunity for More Schools
Did you know that each year the federal government provides over $2.25 billion dollars in discounts to schools and public libraries to facilitate telecommunications, internet access and connectivity to the internet? The FCC has indicated that Priority 2 applications for internal connections and basic maintenance for the new funding year will be considered for those schools that qualify at 61% or better. The following is a summary of some of the items for which you can receive discounts to help build and support your network to transform your program.
Erate Eligible Products and Services – Internal Connections
According to the SLD rules, internal connections are components located at the applicant site that are necessary to transport information to classrooms, publicly accessible rooms of a library, and to eligible administrative areas or buildings. Internal Connections include connections within, between or among instructional buildings that comprise a school campus or library branch, but do not include services that extend beyond the school campus or library branch.
Examples of products and services that are allowable under Internal Connections are:
Servers including:
• Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) • Domain Name Services (DNS) • E-mail • Firewall/Proxy Server • Terminal Services • Tape backup for eligible servers can also be requested
Local Area Network, VOIP and Security Components including:
• Network Switches • Network Cards for PC’s • Routers • Wireless Network Equipment • Wireless Network Cards for PCs • Racks and Cabinets • Network Cabling (includes both Ethernet and fiber) from the wall to the demark • Uninterruptible Power Supply • Video Conferencing/Video Equipment Components • CODEC / Video Encoder (Video Components) • Intrusion Detection Devices • Firewalls • Gateways • Call Managers/VOIP equipment • Installation and configuration of all network equipment • Documentation for the network and cable installation • Basic Maintenance and Technical Support • Telephone Support (24 X 7 x4) • Cable maintenance on all Ethernet and fiber (LAN) • On-site 4 hour support for all network components (switches, servers, routers etc)
