Help Desk Tip

My broadband connection isn't working, what should I do?
The most common ways to resolve connection issues with your home or small business broadband connection are:
- Reboot your Cable or DSL modem. Some modems have power switches, but those that don’t can be unplugged and plugged back in for the same effect.
- If you share your connection with multiple computers, reboot your router. Ensure that all of your cables are plugged firmly in. Loose cables can make your connection unstable.
- Ensure that your cables have not been damaged. Cables that have been pinched in a door or stretched beyond their normal length can break.
- If you are using a wireless connection, ensure you are within range and connected to your wireless access points. Many routers have the same name and can be difficult to tell apart. To change your routers name (or SSID), see your owners manual. Most home wireless access points are effective up to 150 feet indoors.
- Early versions of operating systems (Windows 95 & 98) may require a reboot to reconnect to the Internet when the connection has been interrupted. Later versions (Windows 2000 & XP) will automatically reconnect you to the Internet when it detects the connection has returned.
These steps will resolve 85% of your broadband connection problems.
