Sometimes called "frozen smoke," aerogel is the lightest weight solid and one of the best thermal insulators in the world. Nanogel is Cabot Corporation's trade name for its family of silica aerogels. Although aerogel was first invented 75 years ago, Cabot Aerogel has been producing Nanogel since 2003 at its state-of-the-art plant in Frankfurt, Germany.
Nanogel aerogel’s distinguishing characteristics set it apart from common silica products and make it an ideal solution for a wide variety of applications. When it comes to daylighting, Nanogel enables high energy efficiency without sacrificing natural light or aesthetics. Key characteristics include:
- Low thermal conductivity – k=18mW/m
- High porosity - 95% air, 5% solids
- Nano-sized pores (20-40 nanometers)
- High surface areas (~750m2/g)
- Green manufacturing process and final product - MBDC Cradle-to-Cradle(cm) Silver certification
- Available in opaque, IR opacified and translucent grades
- Surface chemistry - hydrophobic
- Tap Density – 30-45kg/m3
- Oil Absorption (DBP) – 540g/100g
- Particle Size – 5 microns – 4mm
