► ZIPS Offers Free Dry Cleaning for Unemployed… ZIPS Dry Cleaning located in Laurel, Lanham and Marlow Heights will offer free dry cleaning, up to 3 garments weekly, for those unemployed and going on a job interview. Franchise owners and local residents, Bart and Theresa Casiello, say this is their way of giving back to the community. To ensure that prices stay at the everyday rate of $1.99 for any garment to be dry cleaned and pressed, and $1.19 for a shirt to be laundered, ZIPS is a cash-only franchise concept. A typical ZIPS can average 3,000 items daily, making it crucial that clean items go out the door as dirty ones get dropped off. ZIPS, founded in 1996 and began franchising in 2006, has 19 locations. ZIPS offers same day service with the motto, “In by 9 out by 5”. “We take the sting out of dry cleaning.” For more information, visit www.321zips.com.
► Wilhelm Commercial Builders Teams with Gensler Architects to Build Gensler’s Environmentally-Friendly Offices. Leadership in Energy and Environment Design begins with the vision of the design team and is implemented by the construction team. Gensler and Wilhelm brought this vision to life by building Gensler’s new Baltimore office. This fast-paced 10,000 sf project was completed in eleven weeks.
Working under guidelines of Green Building Rating System, the design incorporated a location, with superior views of the Inner Harbor that facilitated accessibility and bicycle storage for the large percentage of bike-riding employees. The open office environment optimized energy efficiencies and incorporated many low-emitting regional materials with recycled content. The lighting system by Encelium Technologies utilized the most advanced lighting control solutions on the market. Wilhelm’s construction team applied LEED practices by using a waste management and indoor air quality plan which maintained strict housekeeping, control measures and waste reduction/diversion.
“Sustainability is the wave of the future that we must all embrace in order to ensure the most appropriate use of resources and overall well-being. The construction industry is advancing greener practices everyday to help recycle, reduce waste and replenish resources. This project was one of our many success stories” states Dianna Wilhelm, Wilhelm Senior VP.

►Dr. Marcia Levi, Optimal Care Chiropractic located in Laurel, shares her head, heart and hands with students at Woodland Job Corps (BWCC member assisting another BWCC member!). The students were inspired by words shared by Dr. Levi who shared her story of growing up in a family of seven brothers and sisters in Guyana, South America. She came from a poor family, lacking food and material items, but had a mother that loved them and shared the importance of love, discipline, and sharing what you have. She spoke of the three Hs': head, heart and hand and encouraged students to learn as much as they could, to go for their dreams, and to give back. When you give back, it will come back to you more than double of what you gave. Dr. Levi encouraged the students to give that extra degree and explained that at 211 degrees, water is hot but at 212 degrees water boils. We should push to give that extra degree to make things happen. Dr. Levi's words of encouragement inspired many students to overcome the challenges in their life and to work hard to achieve their dreams.

► New green initiatives and previous energy conservation standbys in administration and daily campus activities have prompted the Maryland Green Registry (MGR) to accept Capitol College into the esteemed ranks of its membership. Through the MGR, Capitol’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact can be shared with other registry members. Plus, the college gains the insight of other similar universities and companies attempting to be more energy efficient.
Capitol College continues to be environmentally-friendly… the quarterly magazine, the Capitol Chronicle, is printed on paper containing 50% recycled content and posted online for those who prefer to read it virtually. Other crucial student publications like the student handbook/course catalogs are posted online, and the college reduces paper waste by keeping alumni/friends of the college up-to-date electronically through the creation of a monthly e-newsletter, the Capitol Connector.
Eligible Capitol employees are allowed to participate in a telecommuting work option to reduce daily commuter trips/fuel consumption, while teleconferencing technology and the synchronous Capitol Live and asynchronous Capitol Online platforms can host events/meetings for outside visitors in lieu of traveling to campus. The college signed a contract with BGE as part of the BGE Smart Energy Savers Program to improve the campus’s HVAC system, improving energy efficiency.
► Bowie State University (BSU) was awarded a $50,000 Who Will Care? grant over a five-year period from the Maryland Hospital Association to increase the number of nurse graduates. “The Who Will Care? grant will support implementation of a comprehensive academic program at BSU this fall to increase nurse student retention,” said Bonita Jenkins, chair, nursing department at BSU. “The grant will fund curriculum instructional support for content review sessions, study and test taking skills, and licensure exam reviews.” “By increasing nurse student retention, BSU expects to increase graduate rates for the nursing program,” according to Antoinette Coleman, dean, College of Professional Studies.
Nursing graduation rates at BSU have increased in the last three years: 2006, 58%; 2007, 65%; and 2008, 70%. Sixteen other nursing schools in Maryland received Who Will Care? grants. The grants will be used to provide additional operating dollars to nursing schools to add faculty, students, and clinical technology. Statewide, these initial grants will increase the number of nurses graduating in Maryland by 300 students and add 20 faculty positions. A group of stakeholders established Who Will Care? to double the number of nursing graduates in Maryland to address the nursing shortage. To make a donation, contact BSU at 301-860-4000.
