Day of Prayer Celebrations
by Patsy Davis

On the first Monday of November, November 6, Baptist women from around the world came together to pray and give for the advancement of God’s Kingdom. It is a special day as Baptist women around the world are united in spirit through a prayer chain that begins where the sun rises and ends where it sets. The theme for this year was, “Seeing with new eyes: GOD’S MERCY”. The Baptist women of Latin America prepared the program.

The following are some brief testimonies of how the day was celebrated in different places around the world.  For more information and stories go to our website at www.bwawd.org and click on 2006 DOP Reports found on the right hand side.

Dorothy Selebano, president of the BWA Women’s Department, reports that her Convention in South Africa has 10 regions and each region celebrates the Day of Prayer differently. In her region, they combine the Day of Prayer with the November women’s rally which runs for a weekend (two days) and Saturday morning is dedicated to the Day of Prayer program. This year they had pictures of women from Latin America which helped the women to identify with the women who prepared the program. Dorothy along with her Convention executive facilitated the program. There were about 200 women from 20 churches who attended.

Yemi Ladokun, president of the Baptist Women’s Union of Africa, reports that the Day of Prayer in Nigeria was beautiful even in her tiny church that didn’t have plaster on the walls.

Betty M. Gilbert, treasurer of the Hamilton County Baptist Association WMU in Virginia, USA, reported that this year’s program was a very meaningful program. They had great participation from different churches.

The American Baptist Women of Zanesville Baptist Association of Churches in Ohio, USA observed the Day of Prayer program with a most inspiring service on Monday evening, November 6. There was an offering taken at the service which will be helpful in the continuing ministry of the BWA Women’s Department.

Please, don't forget to send your Day of Prayer offering as soon as possible to the appropriate Continental Union.  You can go to our website at www.bwawd.org and click on Development of Resources to learn how your offering will be used to do God's work through Baptist women around the world.
