The GMC Yukon, available here at Colonial Buick GMC in Watertown, Massachusetts, is one of the most versatile and capable full-size SUVs on the market. It can safely carry up to nine people and all of their stuff in spacious comfort while still providing plenty of luxury and technology amenities. For 2015, an all-new, thoughtfully redesigned Yukon sets the bar even higher, offering advanced new powertrains, more room, more convenience, better connectivity and increased comfort.
The all-new 2015 GMC Yukon (MSRP $46,335) has been completely redesigned with a bold new look that includes the signature Yukon grille with chrome surround, projector beam headlamps, and brand-specific LED light signature, complimented by large new 18-, 20- and 22-inch wheels. New aluminum hood and liftgate panels reduce weight for better fuel economy. Careful attention was also paid to make the exterior more aerodynamic, with features like inlaid doors that fit into the body side openings, to further improve efficiency and lessen wind noise. Inside, laminated windshield and front-door glass also contributes to a more serene cabin. A power-operated tailgate with programmable lift height is available. (The Yukon line also includes long-wheelbase Yukon XL and Denali models, which will be discussed in another article.)
For 2015, the Yukon features new and enhanced suspension and chassis components. The frame is more than 75 percent high-strength steel, and new shear-style body mounts that attach to the body both improve structural stiffness. The track and wheels are both wider, further improve handling performance.
Powering the standard Yukon is a new EcoTec3 5.3-liter V8-engine that produces 355 hp and 383 lb/ft of torque through a six-speed automatic transmission. The V8 is E85 capable and uses technologies that include cylinder deactivation, Continuously Variable Valve Timing and direct fuel injection to help it return an EPA-estimated 23 mpg highway – an impressive number for a nine-passenger SUV that can tow up to 8,500 pounds.
More big changes are found in the cabin, where comfort, craftsmanship and technology play a starring role, along with increased versatility and even greater storage functionality. New fold-flat second- and third-row seats are standard, with a segment-exclusive power-folding feature available as an option. There are also plenty of unique ways to store your stuff, including an all-new integrated rear cargo management system; a large, compartmentalized center console with laptop storage and accommodations for hanging file-folders; and new upper door storage. Soft-touch materials, tighter panel gaps and new ambient lighting contribute to the inviting cabin atmosphere.
The Yukon helps you stay connected with a smartphone-inspired eight-inch color touch-screen with GMC IntelliLink and Bluetooth wireless connectivity. Entertainment is provided through a standard Bose sound system with MP3, USB and SD card inputs, and a 4.2-inch Driver Information Center displays a variety of pertinent information.
Passenger comfort is also improved in the 2015 Yukon. There are two extra inches of second-row legroom, and the new Yukon is easier to enter and exit. Keyless entry and push-button start are also standard. The standard Yukon can hold up to 15.3 cubic feet of cargo behind the third row, 51.7 cubic feet behind the second row and a maximum of 94.7 cubic feet with second- and third-row seats folded flat.
The stiffer new frame enhances safety, too. A reinforced steel safety cage, dual-stage front airbags, seat mounted and head-curtain side-impact airbags, and a segment-first front center airbag all work to protect Yukon occupants. StabiliTrak Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, Trailer Sway Control, Hill Start Assist, Auto Grade Braking and OnStar telematics with six-months of the Directions and Connections plan come standard, too. Forward-thinking safety technologies are available in two packages. The Driver Alert and Driver Assistance packages feature Lane Change Assist, Lane Departure Warning, Side Blind Zone Alert, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Forward Collision Alert, Crash Imminent Braking and Front and Rear Park Assist systems. Also available is the Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates the seat-bottom cushion on either side, or both sides, to alert you to the direction of potential danger.
