It seems like Hollywood is constantly attempting to prove that each new year is the best for movies, and 2019 is certainly shaping up to be a year deserving of that title. Next year is packed with some of the most highly anticipated films that the movie industry has to offer. Since sharing a complete list of all these movies would be much too long, here are a few of the most anticipated films of 2019.
“The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part”
“The Lego Movie” turned out to be one of the surprise hits of 2014. Now the same team is coming together to create a sequel for the film, set to be released on Feb. 8. Chris Pratt returns at Emmet, the ordinary LEGO minifigure who helped save the day in the first film. This time, after his friends are abducted and taken into space, Emmet must give chase and play the role of a hero once again.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe receives its first female-led movie in March with “Captain Marvel.” The film stars the superhero of the same name. Set during the 1990s, Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, returns to Earth after serving as an intergalactic superhero for an extended period of time. However, her homecoming raises questions about the true nature of her past.
“Godzilla: King of Monsters”
Monster movie fans have a lot to look forward to in 2019’s “Godzilla: King of Monsters.” The movie serves as the sequel to 2014’s “Godzilla” reboot. In this film, the titanic titular monster will face not one, but three different creatures: series staples Rodan, Mothra and the ferocious King Ghidorah.
“The Lion King”
To this day, “The Lion King” remains one of Disney’s most beloved animated films. Like with “Beauty and the Beast” and “Cinderella,” Disney will be creating a live-action adaption of “The Lion King.” Jon Favreau, who directed the recent live-action “The Jungle Book,” will also be directing this film. The movie includes an impressive cast, with Donald Glover playing Simba and superstar Beyoncé providing the voice for Nala.
“It: Chapter Two”
Those anticipating a sequel to the successful horror movie “It” need not wait much longer. “It: Chapter Two” will hit theaters on Sept. 6. Taking place years after the events of the first entry, the members of the Losers’ Club are all grown-up. Once Pennywise the Dancing Clown begins to reappear, the group will have to come together to stop him once and for all.
The second “Frozen” hit the big screen, it became an instant animated classic. It was only a matter of time until “Frozen” landed a sequel. Disney has been pretty tight-lipped about details surrounding the sequel to “Frozen.” What is known is that Elsa, Anna and Olaf will all be making a return for the second movie in the franchise in 2019.
“Star Wars: Episode IX”
Audiences will return to a galaxy far, far away in December with the release of “Star Wars: Episode IX.” J.J. Abrams, who directed “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” will be returning as the director for this film. After the events of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Rey and the members of the Resistance are traveling across the galaxy to recruit allies in the fight against the First Order, led by the tormented Kylo Ren. Meanwhile, the legacy of the Skywalker family and the fate of Jedi hang in the balance.
If you want to plan a night out at the movie theater, you’ll have plenty of options to choose from in 2019.
