Five Best Swimming Spots in New England
From scenic beaches to indoor aquatic centers, the region is full of fun attractions

New England is known for its fickle weather, but it's safe to say that during the late summer most residents are looking to beat the heat. Before you plan your next swimming trip, take note of some of the best swimming spots in New England, from Maine to Connecticut.

Take a dip at a Connecticut state park
Black Rock State Park in Watertown, Conn., is a popular destination for fishing, camping and other outdoor recreation. The scenic spot features trails for hiking and a rich history going back to the 17th century and earlier. Black Rock Pond, with its backdrop of steep, wooded ledges, is a perfect place to take a dip and cool off after a hike or some fishing. Go to www.ct.gov/dep/cwp/view.asp?a=2716&q=325176 to learn more.

Dive right in at a Vermont aquatic center
From fitness classes to competitive swimming, the Upper Valley Aquatic Center of White River Junction, Vt., is full of fun and exciting ways to spend long summer days. The center features a leisure pool, a competition pool and swimming classes for people of all ages. Enroll your kids in summer Splash Camp or host a birthday party, all at one convenient location. Visit www.uvac-swim.org for details.

Learn why Rhode Island is the Ocean State
The littlest state with the biggest name, Rhode Island, is also known as the Ocean State, thanks to popular spots like Misquamicut State Beach in Westerly. The scenic beach offers amenities like a large paved parking lot, restrooms and concession stands. The site covers more than half a mile of beachfront, but show up early on sunny weekend days because it does tend to fill up. For more information, check out www.riparks.com/misquamicut.htm.

Make a splash in Maine
If you're looking for a family-friendly day of fun and adventure, look no further than Aquaboggan Water Park in Saco, Maine. This destination features monster-sized waterslides, a giant wave pool, bumper boats and more. You can even take a break from the water and head over to the Grand Prix go-cart course or play a round of mini golf. Visit www.aquabogganwaterpark.com for more.

Take a plunge off the Cape
Cape Cod is one of the most popular destinations in Massachusetts, and, nearly surrounded by ocean, the entire area is prime for swimming. The six National Seashore beaches lining the edge of the Cape are particularly striking, and each one offers restrooms, changing rooms, lifeguards during the summer and paved parking. The six National Seashore beaches are located in Eastham (Coast Guard and Nauset Light), Wellfleet (Marconi Beach), Truro (Head of the Meadow Beach) and Provincetown (Race Point and Herring Cove). For rates and other details, visit www.visit-massachusetts.com/beaches.

From sunny beaches to water-themed amusement parks, New England provides plenty of summer recreation. Choose from the area's best swimming spots the next time you're looking to beat the heat.
