December has come and gone without any snow, but it's important to remember that winter driving in New England can still be dangerous--with our without snow.  The mild fall and winter will lead to more frost heaves and potholes as the season progresses.  Potholes may not seem like a big deal but when they sneak up on you they can create a lot of unnecessary problems for you and your BMW.

 

Potholes are one of the biggest hazards during the winter.  Seemingly invisible, potholes can fill with water and snow, disguising their true size.  Lightweight Performance alloy wheels can be bent from a significant pothole impact.  The short term effect of a tire/rim damaged by a pot hole is vibration.  This vibration can be  felt through both the steering wheel and the body of the car, which is not only annoying, but dangerous as well!  Your tire can develop a bubbled sidewall which has less strength and is more prone to failure.  Bent wheels can also cause the bead of the tires to leak slowly.  Long term effects are uneven tire wear on the undamaged tires, poor handling caused by your alignment being out of specification, and an overall poor driving experience.

After the end of the war, the company turned its attention to rail vehicle brakes and built-in engines, following the production ban on aircraft engines.  In 1922, the company sold its engine production operations, together with the name BMW, to Bayerische Flugzeug-Werke (BFW) and moved into its factory.  The date on which BFW was founded, March 7, 1916, is thus taken as the date of establishment of the enterprise that was once again known as Bayerische Motoren Werke AG.

 

The exterior of the new BMW head office was finished in time for the 1972 Olympic Games.  By the time the company occupied it in 1973, continuing growth meant that it had already outgrown its new home.  The new office block and the BMW museum, a mere stone's throw from the tent-like canopies stretched out over Munich's Olympic Park, symbolized prosperity, autonomy and technical perfection.  Plus a hint of utopia.
