Vehicle Profile: 2012 BMW M6 Convertible
A new definition for “ultimate.”

It’s been two years since BMW offered an M6 Convertible, and the all-new 2012 version arriving this month assures M enthusiasts that the wait has been worthwhile. A new 560-hp M TwinPower Turbo V8 engine sets a new benchmark for top-down M driving performance.
Most enthusiasts would probably agree that exceeding the performance and luxury benchmarks set by the previous BMW M6 would be difficult, so you can imagine the challenge BMW M Division engineers faced when tasked to do so. The 2012 BMW M6 Convertible, with an MSRP of $113,100, aptly shows they achieved that lofty goal.
The previous generation M6 offered 500 hp from a race-bred 5.0-liter V10, but BMW M raised the ante to 560 hp for the 2012 model. The performance boost comes courtesy of the new 4.4-liter 560-hp M TwinPower Turbo V8 that also doles out a whopping 30 percent increase in peak torque over the previous V10 (500 lb/ft versus 383 lb/ft). Step on the accelerator in the 2012 M6 Convertible and, by 1,500 rpm – which is to say, immediately – you’ve unleashed 500 lb/ft of torque that remains through 5,750 rpm.
Channeled through a lightning-quick seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission (M DCT) with Launch Control, that mountain of torque pushes the open-top M6 from zero to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds. BMW preserved the hallmark responsiveness of M engines in the new M TwinPower Turbo V8 thanks to Double-VANOS infinitely variable camshaft timing, High Precision Direct Injection and patented Valvetronic individual intake valve control.
The M Double Clutch Transmission provides both automatic and manual modes, but you’ll never need to press a clutch pedal because there isn’t one. The dual-clutch design ensures the quickest shifts possible, and full-throttle acceleration occurs with zero hesitation during gear changes.
As it does for all its models, BMW M Division engineered the new M6 Convertible to stand up to track driving, and it’s in a track environment where the driver can safely exploit the car’s full thrust capability using Launch Control. When engaged, Launch Control ensures maximum traction and optimally executes the automatic gear changes. A special large-diameter dual exhaust system, which runs mainly in a straight line from the engine to the rear muffler and customary M quad tailpipes, unleashes a rousing soundtrack to such activity.
The increased performance comes with increased fuel efficiency. The fuel-saving Auto Start-Stop function switches off the engine at stops, immediately restarting when the brake is released.
The holistic approach BMW M engineers follow for developing ultimate performance cars also shows in the M6 Convertible chassis, where the innovative Active M Differential optimizes power distribution between the rear wheels. BMW M tuned the standard Dynamic Damper Control (DDC) electronically controlled shock absorbers on Germany’s famous Nürburgring race track. You can, with the touch of the M Drive system button, further fine-tune responses of the DDC suspension, engine, steering, shifting and stability control to make the BMW M6 Convertible perform exactly as you wish.
The brand’s overall mastery at blending high performance with an almost bespoke level of design and luxury provides further assurance that the 2012 M6 Convertible has indeed earned “ultimate” status. The body, constructed of steel and aluminum with lightweight, thermoplastic front fenders, shows the distinctive M design touch in the fender flares and vents, larger front air intakes and 19-inch forged alloy wheels.
With the standard Comfort Access system, you can lower or raise the convertible top using the key-integrated remote control. The standard 20-way M Multi-Contour front seats, Merino extended leather upholstery and navigation system with 10.2-inch screen and rearview camera typify the level of amenities in the 2012 BMW M6 Convertible.
High-tech options that can further elevate the M6 driving experience include Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection, soft-close automatic doors and 1,100-watt Bang & Olufsen High-End Surround Sound System. The discerning enthusiast can tailor the car’s appearance and luxury by choosing from BMW Individual exterior paint colors and interior leather choices.
Exclusivity comes as part of the 2012 BMW M6 Convertible. Call to check on availability, and make it a point to come in and see this pinnacle automobile.
