BMW Launches New i Division
BMW i3 and BMW i8 will debut in 2013.

A new chapter is about to be written in the BMW story, one that takes the brand’s formidable engineering and design resources and turns them toward one of the most important challenges facing modern automakers – the question of sustainable mobility.

The BMW i sub-brand is scheduled to hit the market in 2013 with two never-before-seen BMW models: The BMW i3 and the BMW i8. These vehicles represent an entirely fresh face for BMW, and they will provide drivers with battery-powered electric options that will keep BMW ahead of the pack in the production of eco-friendly transportation.

The BMW i3 is an extension of the brand’s Megacity Concept. The subcompact car will offer a fully electric drivetrain featuring a rechargeable battery. The BMW i8 will be a larger model built around a plug-in hybrid platform, in many ways resembling the technology and styling cues seen in the BMW Vision EfficientDynamics Concept. Each vehicle prominently features the BMW LifeDrive architecture, a design that includes an aluminum chassis and a high-strength, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) bodyshell. The LifeDrive body concept is specially designed for alternative drivetrains, and offers the utmost in weight savings and passenger safety.

Using the tagline “Born Electric,” BMW i represents the next generation of personal mobility in urban environments around the world. The new challenges presented by the coming wave of changes to personal transportation have driven BMW technological development for years, and the BMW i division is the latest effort from the German brand to try to anticipate where the future of the auto industry is heading.

The BMW i brand will offer a full range of personal mobility services to be managed under the BMW i Ventures umbrella. This new entity, based in New York City, will combine existing programs such as BMW ConnectedDrive with the next phase of mobility technologies. These include the development of intelligent navigation systems with improved local awareness, upscale car sharing initiatives, strategic partnerships and the development of tools like MyCityWay, which joins over 50 local mobility apps in one interface intended to help drivers find parking, master public transportation and locate points of interest in more than 40 cities across the United States.

The i3 and i8 automobiles provide an exciting glimpse into what BMW’s cutting-edge research has to offer drivers looking to embrace the next phase of performance-oriented sustainable transportation.
