BALLISTIC MICRO-FIGHT REVIEW

BMF Tape Reviews
by Phil Hughes

My first introduction to Tony's work was an article called Panic Attack. I was a 'black belt' searching for truth at the time like most who 'arrive' and feel like something was missing from the experience. I remember seeing photos of guys in hockey gear and gloves grinding into each other more like animals than 'artists'. I resonated with it. Something in the pit of my stomach said this is what I'm missing.

A number of years later I finally met Tony face to face and a life changing private lesson. He asked me what the basis of my life's journey was. “Knowledge is power”, I said. Tony's answer continues to affect my life today, "Only if the knowledge is the truth."

Truth is Power. To get to truth requires brutal (pun intended) honesty. The original Panic Attack was created as a measuring tool for performance in a violent encounter. A bucket of cold water in a world of 'two-step' reality. In short 'The most realistic fake stuff he could come up with.'

The drill has gone under dramatic evolutions over the years as Tony continued to hone it into what we now call Ballistic Micro Fight or BMF. Like any performance oriented coach Tony tried to create real progress in the 60 seconds available in each minute. ...Because of advances in equipment (High Gear) and the development of role players (Be a Good Bad Guy), the BMF model is one of the most efficient and effective ways to safely discover combative truth.

Although all videos from Forging a Fighting System to SPEAR for MMA include BMF training concepts. I've included a brief synopsis of the BMF focused DVD’s in the library.

PANIC ATTACK '96 - LEVEL 1 (MENTAL)
Primarily a lecture, this tape focuses on the 'Stun and Run' principle and the safe and scientific approach to force-on-force training. It covers the importance of dialogue in scenario training and introduces the first High Gear prototypes.

PANIC ATTACK '96 - LEVEL 2 (FIGHTS)
This is a collection of the simulations from a Panic Attack seminar. It includes an explanation of scenario training and a debrief of each scenario.

BMF BASICS
Filmed at a PDR session this tape addresses the most common initiation attacks and uses the Emotional Climate formula to safely develop full speed BMF's. Drills are shown with and without High Gear and the importance of training with Primal and Protective, along with Tactical, responses is emphasized.

BE A GOOD BAD GUY
This video is the bible for good role playing. The BAGBG principle was developed to teach the importance of realistic resistance in scenario training. Not to be confused with sparring, scenario and simulation training requires a strict focus from the Bad Guy to provide 'scenario appropriate' energy and tactics. Examples with and without High Gear are provided throughout.

BALLISTIC MICRO-FIGHTS: LEARNING MODELS & DRILLS
This was filmed at a PDR session and was a 'crash course' on putting together safe and realistic BMF. It explains the rationale behind the Micro Fight concept and how this anaerobically charged isolation drill can challenge you on emotional and psychological levels.

HIGH GEAR DYNAMIC SIMULATION GEAR: DESIGN, USE, SAFETY & DRILLS
This is the video 'instruction manual' for High Gear. It covers care & storage, suiting up, safety considerations, and a suggested method of initial training. It comes free with all High Gear purchases and is a MUST view for safe training. "Training should hurt but never injure" - BLAUER Maxim
