Keeping an Eye Out for Contact Lens Safety
by Nanette Moss, C.I.H. and David Shore
For almost three decades, the use of contact lenses in laboratories and in chemical environments was prohibited, or at least discouraged, by many companies. A review by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) of the injury data has found that such data is lacking to indicate that contact lenses should be restricted during work with hazardous chemicals. As of June 2005, NIOSH now recommends that contact lens wear be permitted in chemical environments provided that the following safety guidelines are followed. These guidelines include:
- Conduct an eye injury hazard evaluation that examines potential chemical exposures and the need for personal protective equipment (PPE), contact lens wear, and appropriate eye and face protection for contact lens wearers. This evaluation should be conducted by a qualified safety professional or toxicologist.
- Provide appropriate eye and face protection for all workers. Wearing contact lenses does not appear to require enhanced eye and face protection.
- Establish a written policy documenting safety requirements for wearing contact lenses, including the eye and face protections and contact lens wear restrictions
- Notify workers and visitors about any defined areas where contact lenses are restricted
- Train in-house first aid personnel in the removal of contact lenses
- Direct wearers to remove lenses at the first signs of eye redness and irritation after washing their hands. Begin eye irrigation immediately (even before lenses are removed) and remove lenses as soon as practical in the event of a chemical exposure
Additional support from EH&E can be provided on developing and administering contact lens policies in chemical environments, conducting hazard evaluations for contact lens wearers, and Train-the-Trainer programs for safe contact lens wearing. Contact (800) 825-5343 for additional information on these support services or send an email to contact@eheinc.com and a representative will be in contact with you shortly.
