And the Rocket’s Red Glare…
The top five Fourth of July fireworks displays.

The Fourth of July is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate our nation’s independence than with fireworks? From the mountains to the prairies, here is the lowdown on where you can catch the five best Fourth of July fireworks displays this great nation has to offer.

5. Macy’s Fireworks Spectacular – New York City, New York

From its Thanksgiving Day Parade to its Christmas displays, Macy’s always knows how to celebrate the holidays, and Independence Day is no exception. Watch as fireworks are set off over the city skyline, reflecting light onto the Hudson River. It is a truly quintessential NYC celebration. Local radio stations broadcast patriotic music that plays in unison with the fireworks, so be sure not to forget your boom box! Don’t worry if you can’t make it out to New York because most NBC affiliates televise the show every Fourth. Check your local listings.

4. Navy Pier Fireworks – Chicago, Illinois

What better way to celebrate the Fourth than in the adopted hometown of our nation’s president? Chicago’s Navy Pier is home to a Summer season of fireworks that will have even the most enthusiastic fireworks fans tuckered out by season’s end. However, it’s the Fourth of July display that really lays all the cards out on the table. With a truly awe-inspiring grand finale, it is well worth tackling the crowds at one of Chicago’s busiest tourist destinations. Insiders Tip: For the best views, hunt down a spot at Buckingham Fountain or Grant Park.

 3. Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular – Boston, Massachusetts

The fireworks are coming! The fireworks are coming! With Boston being an integral part of the Independence Day legacy, it is no surprise that the city’s Fourth of July celebrations are among the nation’s best. Since 1973, Boston has been setting off a sizzling fireworks display to the tune of Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. More than 200,000 true-blue patriots descend upon the Charles River each and every year for this music and pyrotechnic extravaganza! Featuring a concert from the world renowned Boston Pops Orchestra, this event is a “do not miss.” After all, the spirit of Massachusetts is the spirit of America!

2. A Capital Fourth – Washington, DC

A list of Fourth of July celebrations can’t possibly be complete without mentioning the celebration that takes place in our nation’s capital. Thomas Jefferson hosted the first official Fourth of July celebration on the lawn of his mansion some 200 years ago. It has come a long way since those days, but it maintains the true patriotism and love for a country with which this date is synonymous. Starting with a parade that features representatives from all branches of the military, as well as a performance by the acclaimed National Symphony Orchestra, the night ends with a fireworks display that will have your heart beating in time to “Proud to be an American.” This event can get a little crowded, but don’t fret; beat the crowds with a front-row seat on your couch – you can catch the show from the comfort of your own home, as it is broadcasted live on PBS.

1. Wawa Welcome AmericaPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania

How can you have a list of patriotic celebrations and not list Philly, the birthplace of America, in the number one spot? Not to mention, this city knows how to celebrate! Philadelphia’s Fourth celebrations last an entire week and feature a smorgasbord of family-friendly activities including concerts, movies and more. But the high point is the fireworks, set off over the majestic Philadelphia Museum of Art and joined by a concert, which in previous years has been headlined by everyone from Sheryl Crow to John Legend. It is the truest testament to our nation’s independence. However, to really experience why Philadelphia is number one on the list, you’ll need to take a break from the spectacular concert and the absolutely breathtaking fireworks and acknowledge the importance of where you are sitting in American history. To celebrate the Fourth in Philly is to truly celebrate the Fourth.
