David Sleeper, Encore Books
by Maryellen Duckett

David Sleeper mined booksellers gold when he tapped into a valuable natural resource – a community filled with avid readers. Although he had never been in the book business before, Sleeper recognized the tremendous need for a local used bookstore and decided to fill it. In a recent conversation with Bargain Book News, Sleeper talked about what it is like to run a used bookstore and shared the important lesson he learned from a line of people waiting in the rain. Industry Tips

Industry Lingo:
“Promotional” and “Bargain” Books -Promotional Books are published with an imprinted price at which they were never intended to sell. They may be “quasi-coffee table books” with a price mark of $49.95, for instance, but actually intended to retail at $19.95 from the onset. The imprinted price gives the customer the perception of a higher value. Bargain books can be any discount book associated with the industry.

Trade Show Tip:  Consider promoting your next exhibit before the trade show actually begins.  This can be accomplished by executing a few simple marketing ideas.  First, change your answering machine message to include information about the next show and your booth number.  Secondly, send a post card or flyer to your customer base inviting them to your booth and include any “specials” you might have.  Last but not least, send an e-mail asking your customers to stop by and say hello. A little personalization is always a positive thing.

Freight Tip:
When shipping always remember to mark the boxes or the skid with a ship-to & from, address and telephone number. The reason for this is to enable product that has somehow been separated from the paper work to be more easily identified.  If shipping a skid of books, the recommendation is to tightly secure the product to the pallet with shrink wrap and to put the “ship-to” address, telephone number and contact name on at least 2 of the 4 sides of the skid. When shipping individual boxes, each box must be marked with a ship-to address, telephone number and contact. EACH BOX!
