Tatnuck to Open New Store Larry Abramoff and wife Gloria, founder and co-owner of Tatnuck Booksellers will open a second store later this year. The new store will be 31,000 sq. ft. and carry 150,000 titles. His original store is 29,000 sq. ft and has been in operation for 29 years. Book Selling this Week BEA Show: Leadership to Change Greg Topalian, vice-president and show manager for Book Expo America since 2000 will be leaving the show to head up a new business division within the company. Christopher McCabe, vice-president of PGA Golf Exhibitors will be responsible for BEA management. Book Selling This Week Used Book Sells Up Again Book Hunter Press says sales of used books online have increased by 11% over the past two years. The most popular sites for buying used books online are; Abe books (nearly 40 %), Amazon (17%), Alibris (13%) and eBay (9%). BTW news Briefs Joseph- Beth Opens New Store Joseph- Beth has opened a new store in Pittsburgh. The store is 30,000 sq. ft. and carries books, music, DVD’s and stationary. Unfortunately, according to PW Daily, Joseph-Beth closed one of its Cleveland stores. The store, located in the Shaker Heights area, has struggled since it opened in 2000. Most of those employees are being transferred to the 28,500-square-foot Lyndhurst location. PW Daily Barns and Noble Takes Over College Bookstores in Kentucky The Kentucky Community and Technical College System will be operated by Barnes and Nobel beginning in July. The system has 65 locations and serves 72,000 students. Campus Market Place NACS Corp. Announces New Program with Ingram The National Association of College Bookstores will combine it’s 200,000 title database with Ingram. NACS CORP will in turn display Ingram’s product online. Campus Marketplace Justice Earns Royalty Income Clarence Thomas, a supreme court justice, received a $500,000 advance for his memoirs. The advance is 2.5 times his annual salary of $194,000. This is much more than Rehnquist and O’Conner received for their recent books. The 2005 release date will include information on growing up in segregated Georgia and his controversial 1991 confirmation battle. Anvilpub.com CBA Attendance Up The Christian Booksellers Association met at the World Congress Center in Atlanta, the last week of June. The show drew approximately 11,000 attendees which was up about 8%. There were 1251 exhibitors. Anvilpub.com ABEbooks to Sell New Books Abebooks, which has made its business selling used and antiquated books online, is now selling new books. Hanes Blum, president of Abebooks, says that new books are a natural progression for the company. “We sell 20,000 books a day and 97% of our customers buy new books as well as used”. Abebooks has a current database of over 50 million books, with 12,000 used and rare booksellers selling on Abebooks.com. Over the past three years 50 new independent publishers have been listing books on Abebooks.com. Anvilpub.com ABA Sells HQ The American Booksellers Association has sold its headquarters in Tarrytown, N.Y for $5.75 million. The ABA bought the property in 1991 for 2.8 million dollars when the associations membership topped 5000 members. At that time the ABA had 50 plus full time employees, published a monthly magazine, ran bookseller schools and operated the book industry’s national trade show. Harry Potter Hoax A 19-year-old Florida college student is very apologetic after spreading a bogus title for the next J.K Rowling book. The false title, Harry Potter and the Pillar of Storge, spread miraculously via cyber rumor. The real title of the next book will be Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. The college student has apologized, saying he feels “awful” and added, “I never thought my hoax would go so far!” In Touch Weekly
