Pay Through the Nose: When we feel that we are being overcharged or gouged by someone, the term “paying through the nose” comes to mind. In Ninth Century Ireland, a poll tax was assessed on Irish households by the English government. Individuals in non compliance were hunted down and their nose was slit. Thus, the tern “paying through the nose” became synonymous with paying too much for an item or service. (Source: Common Phrases and Where They Came From, Myron Korach, Lyons Press, 2002)
