You Want Me To Look Where?

First Impressions -

They say you never have a second chance to make a first impression. Sometimes, once people get to know you in a business or social setting, you can overcome an awkward first meeting.  The rules are different at a trade show because you have only second to make that first impression.  You are on stage all the time. Some personal appearance tips –

Always have appropriate clothes for the occasion. At trade shows and associated events, dress up rather than down.  For example, a suit is acceptable at a Business casual function but Business casual is not acceptable at a formal occasion.

You should dress appropriately for the audience you want to impress.  The East Coast is more formal than the West Coast.  Foreign visitors to a U.S. show will dress more formally than American at an overseas show.  What you wear around the house in not acceptable, even when you are setting up. No sweats, baggy, torn, faded or out-of-date clothes – no matter how comfortable.

Shoes!  Your feet are your friends, and never more than at a trade show. Comfortable shoes are mandatory. Never wear new shoes at a show.  Always make sure your shoes are appropriate for the way you are dressed. Suits require dress shoes.  Clean and polished shoes show you care about the details, and are a quick way for visitors to size you up.  Change your shoes at least once a day to improve your posture and foot health.  Women should have shoes with three different heel heights – flats, 1” or 2” heels, etc. More next issue!
